Yuk Ching Charity Trust and the AVS a summer student volunteer programme, named Miracle Summer “Digital Rescue Team”. The programme provides learning opportunities for seniors who need support in using smartphones.
The programme covers:
- Learning basic functions (including communication features such as video calls and voice messages)
- Taking photos and using the photo album
- Using WhatsApp to stay connected with family and friends
- Searching for health information online
- Installing and using practical applications, such as weather, transportation, maps, HA Go, eHealth (醫健通) and other government services
- A simple introduction to AI Gemini, guiding seniors in an easy-to-understand way to learn about the concept of AI, and encouraging them to interact with AI through conversation—so they can experience the convenience and fun that technology brings
The programme adopts simple, easy-to-understand teaching delivered by student volunteers, and provides one-on-one assistance from volunteers to ensure that the learning pace suits seniors’ needs. For seniors, having someone who can answer questions patiently, repeat demonstrations, and provide timely guidance is often the key to taking the first step.
Meanwhile, through accompanying seniors throughout the learning process, student volunteers not only teach smartphone skills, but also build meaningful interactions. They gain a better understanding of seniors’ questions and needs in the digital world—forming a two-way learning experience: “teaching and interaction with mutual growth.”
Miracle Summer “Digital Rescue Team” is more than a smartphone training activity—it is a caring initiative that brings warmth and support to seniors. When seniors can use their smartphones more comfortably to connect with loved ones, search for health information, and access practical services, they can face everyday life with greater confidence and ease.
Yuk Ching Charity Trust and the AVS hope that through this summer volunteer programme, seniors will feel respected and accompanied, while student volunteers bring the spirit of helping into the community—so that every conversation can become a better beginning for connection.
